How-To: Magnetic Bookmark (With Glitter Of Course!!)

When I sat down to make my Back to School bookmark for All Things for Mom, I wasn’t halfway through before I thought, “I’ve got to make one of these for myself!” And as I was putting the finishing touches on the original bookmark that my little guy is now using, I was already writing down what supplies I would need for mine! The finished “adult” bookmark is just as cute as the original, and also just as easy to make. Below you’ll find the step-by-step how-to, but as always, if there are any questions along the way, just ask!

Materials:

• Scrapbook paper (You need such a small amount, that you’ll probably be able to get away with some from your scrap bin!)
• Coordinating ink pad
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Craft knife and cutting mat
• Bone folder
• Needle
• Coordinating embroidery floss
• Hole punch
• Q-tip
• Paper flowers in a variety of colors and sizes (Your design may vary, but I used 11 for my bookmark, in varying sizes from 1/2″ up to 3/4″.)
• Adhesive roller
• Adhesive backed magnetic strips (You can find these in your large chain craft store!)

**I also used Martha Stewart’s adhesive stencils and glitter transfer paper from Plaid Crafts to jazz up my scrapbook paper a bit.  It was super fun to work with.  If you’d like a few of my tips to get the best results, take a peek at my post, here!

Directions:

1.  Cut scrapbook paper 2 1/2″ x 10″.  Flip over to backside, and score down the center.  Flip back over to right side and fold in half.  Your bookmark should now measure 2 1/2″ x 5″.

2.  Measure in 5/8″ from each side, in along the fold and mark.  Measure down 7/8″ on each side, from the fold, and mark.  Draw a line connecting your marks on each side, and cut, to give your bookmark a tag shape.

** This is where I had some fun and used the Martha Stewart stencils and glitter.  Just have it!

3.  Punch a hole at the top of your bookmark, and use a Q-tip to ink the inside.  Use an ink pad to ink all of the other edges of your bookmark.

4.  Using embroidery floss,  secure your flowers to your bookmark with french knots.

 

5.  Cut another piece of scrapbook paper 2 1/4″ x 4 7/8″.  Again, measure in from the top 5/8″ from each side, mark.  Measure 7/8″ in down from each side at the top, mark.  Connect your marks and cut.  Adhere this piece to the inside of your bookmark, to cover up your loose threads.

6.  Cut two adhesive back magnetic strips 2 1/4″ long, and adhere to inside of your bookmark, along the bottom edge.

To make the tassel:

Cut a length of embroidery floss 12″ long.  Tie the ends together, and loop it through the hole in your bookmark, then through itself, to secure it in place. (Be sure the knot ends up at the top of the tassel!) Fold down 1 1/2″ of the floss, to create a loop at the top, and knot it in place.  Make a french knot in the center of a small flower, do not cut your floss! Push your needle right through the knot in your tassle, and secure another flower to the other side, again with a french knot.  Now, knot your floss one last time, between the two flowers, and cut it. (PS…If you’re worried about your flowers staying put, you can put just a drop of hot glue between them, too!)
