I can remember when I was little she always had Creative Circle kits for me to work on. I remember one in particular was a duck in a bathtub. It was the hardest one I had done so far. She would help me with the more complicated stitches. I would sit for hours working on it.
Then I got older, my interests changed…we didn’t craft much together for a long time.
She called one day out of the blue about ten years ago and said “I need a quilt and I’d like you to help me make it.” How could I say no? She had fostered a love for crafting in my mother and me for literally as long as we both can remember. How could I not drop everything to help her?
So that’s what I did.
We spent the weekend at my mom’s…the three of us cutting, sewing, and pressing. We each had our jobs.
I had designed the quilt beforehand based on what she wanted. I sewed. My mom pressed.
And Annie…well…Annie was in charge of the pins.
When we first arrived and started setting up, she took a quick glance at my pincushion and gave me a look that only Annie could give. “Nickels, is that really how you keep your pins?” I was caught.
And that’s how she got her job.
She quickly organized the pins by color and purpose.
She sat beside me and handed them to me when I needed them.
When I finished with a pile of them, she slowly and very neatly put them back in their proper position.
And now, every single day, when I sit down to sew, I take the time to put each pin back in its proper place.
Every time I walk into my craft room and see my perfectly arranged pincushion, I think of her, and miss her so very much…especially today.
Beautiful. Love this. xo
This is a lovely post, Nikki!
love it-I never had anyone else interested.Always wished for someone to share-God bless your Annie
That’s a beautiful story Nikki. I hope that my grandkids will remember the times we have crafted together with fond memories.
Thank you, Marijean!
I’m sure they will. They are my favorite memories from growing up, and I hope they are the same for your grandkids!
