It happens every year….
The weather gets cold, and I get the itch to play with yarn.
Today I have the first of two crochet projects for you, both head warmers. (Head warmer #2 is coming your way next week!)
They are adorable, work up in one night in front of the TV, and make great stocking stuffers, too!
Enjoy,
Nikki, In Stitches
Materials:
- *100 yards of a “chunky” yarn
- Size G Crochet Hook
- Tapestry needle
- Button
*Any of your favorite yarns can be used for this project. I used Paton’s Classic Wool, but anything that’s a little thick and/or chunky will work up just fine! Just remember, you may need to adjust your hook size accordingly.
Directions:
Head Warmer:
Ch 64. (NOTE: This head warmer will fit an adult. In fact, this is one I made for myself! To adjust it to fit little ones, simply chain fewer stitches!)
Join in round with a sl st, making sure that the chain is not twisted.
Rnd 1: Ch 1. SC in each ch around. Join with a sl st.
Rnd 2: Ch 2. DC in each SC around. Join with a sl st.
Rnds 3 – 6: Repeat Rnd 2 four times.
Rnd 7: Ch 1. SC in each DC around. Join with a sl st.
Fasten off.
Weave in all loose ends.
Flower:
(Don’t let the directions for this flower intimidate you! Once you actually have it in front of you, it’s easier to see exactly where your stitches should be placed. It does get a bit cumbersome to work with by the last round, but trust me…it’s worth it! If, however, you’ve got a favorite flower pattern already, feel free to use that one instead!)
Ch 5. Sl st in 1st ch to make a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1. (SC, ch 3) 5 times in ring. Join with a sl st to 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (SC, 5 DC, SC) in each ch-3 sp around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 3: Ch 1. Working behind the petals made in Rnd 2, (SC in next ch-3 sp of Rnd 1, ch 5) around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, (SC, 9 DC, SC) in ch-5 sp around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 5: Ch 1. Working behind petals made in Rnd 4, (SC in next ch-3 sp of Rnd 1, ch 7) around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, (SC, 13 DC, SC) in ch-7 sp around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 7: Ch 1. Working behind petals made in Rnd 6, (SC in next ch-3 sp of Rnd 1, ch 9) around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.
Rnd 8: Ch1. (SC, 17 DC, SC) in ch-9 sp around. Join with a sl st to the 1st ch made at the start of this rnd.

Enjoy!
Round 1 of the flower is that a total of 6 petals? Thanks.
It should be 5, Joan!
thank you for the pattern have been looking for something like this for a long time
My pleasure, Maryanne!!
Thanks so much for a super easy flower. Can’t wait to make in a lot of colors!
Phyllis,
The last few rounds can be a little tricky to see exactly where to go, but no one will ever know if you’re a bit off 😉
I’m very excited to becoming part of your family. That’s what it seem’s like! Leann Jeffers
Oh my goodness! Leann! Welcome!
I’m so happy you’re here!
Hello!
You mention that there is going to be another head warmer in 2 weeks, as of January 2014, I cannot locate another on your website. Please advise where I may find it.
Many thanks,
Pat
Hi Pat!
Here is the link to the second head warmer pattern: http://www.nikkiinstitches.com/faux-button-closure-crochet-headband-free-pattern/
It’s a faux button closure!
Nikki
I would live to be able to make stuff like this but I have never Dione crocheting . Is there a beginners site or video or what do you recommend for a person who would like to do this but has no clue where to begin. It’s all foreign to me lol .. Thanks Robin
I’m a grandmother now and there’s more coming so I’m excited to start trying to do stuff like this…
Robin,
I personally don’t have a beginner crochet tutorial, but I found one I think you’ll learn a lot from.
It comes from Red Heart yarn company.
http://www.redheart.com/learn/learn-how-crochet
Take a peek at the picture tutorials and play around a bit.
If you have questions, just ask!
PS…Welcome to the world of crochet! You’re going to be hooked! (HaHa! Couldn’t resist!)
In the “free crochet ear warmer headband” pattern recently I didn’t understand a step for the flower. Number three step said “Working behind the petals, etc,” I couldn’t understand
that step.
Hi Norma!
If you’re looking at your work, you have just created a round of “petals” for your flower. In the next round, you want to be sure to work behind those petals you just made!
That is confusing me also. So basically do you mean to turn your work around & work from that side?
Never mind….I think I figured it out!!
Marla! Are you sure you got it?
Let me know exactly which part you’re struggling with!
Im not sure how to work behind the petals? Please help!
Lidia,
Don’t stress too much. You are just “anchoring” your petals down and you won’t see these stitches. As long as you are consistent, your petals will all be the correct sizes and you’ll be fine!
What is the diameter of the flower?
Hi Danielle!
I have one finished here that’s about 3.5″ to 3.75″ across!
When you say work behind petals, does that mean your yarn crosses in front/on top of your previous petals?
Rachel,
The yarn does cross over but it happens at the base of the petals, and gets covered up as your build the flower!
I still can’t figure out step 3. I don’t get what working behind the flower means. I am just stitching right on top of the petals? So confused lol
Never mind. I figured it out too. So easy once it clicked. Daughter loves this! Made it Hot Magenta. Quite pretty and she is in heaven. Thank you!
Yay, Bek!
I’m so happy you got it!!!
I am confused on round 3 of the flower. I can’t figure out where to start.
Lori,
Round 3 is a repetition of Row 2.
Just do the same thing it said to do in Row 2. (Rnd 2: Ch 2. DC in each SC around. Join with a sl st.)
You’ll actually do that same thing for Rows 3, 4, 5, and 6!
Is nou maar eers ‘n beginner.
Baie dankie vir jou oulike patron waardeer.
My pleasure, Talita!
Thank YOU for stopping by!
I am thrilled that I found your free pattern! I’ll be making it tonight.
Thank you,
Sarita
Yay, Sarita!
Let me know how it goes!!
thank you for sharing this! Instructions are clear, end product is adorable! Flower is one of the easiest and quickest ones out there.
I’ve found that my chains tend to be tighter than the rest of my work and will use the fsc to begin some projects. this is one of them. It makes a huge difference for me. That is the only thing that I changed. all the rest is the same. Just wanted to share that.
Oh! Thank you, Wenona!
And thanks so much for your tip of using the foundation single crochet! Such a good idea!
Would using a larger hook make a bigger flower?
It will, Raylene, but, if you use the same yarn, it will also create a more “open weave” petal.
If you’re going to increase the size of your hook, you should probably also use a thicker yarn so your petals don’t have holes in them!
In still don’t understand Row 3 of the flower…
Hi Nicole!
The hard part about round 3 is really just finding where to place your single crochet stitches, and the good part is, since you’re working BEHIND the rows you just made, you won’t be able to see them, so it really doesn’t matter! As long as you are consistent, your petals will be evenly placed!
Lovely headband and flower, thank you.
On the flower, there are five petals in center, then does the number of the petals increase by one with each even round? 6,7,and 8? Or stay five petals throughout?
Martha,
If I remember correctly, there are always five petals, they just get bigger and bigger with each round!
Thank you, Nikki!
My pleasure, Martha!
I love this flower but is there a similar one that can be done on a knitting loom?
Charlene,
I’d have to think about that one, but I’m wondering if you could somehow make a series of scalloped shapes strung together, could you then just spiral them to form a flower? Does that make sense?
You’ve inspired me to play with this idea….stay tuned!
Hi nikki how can i print this headband with flower out? as it’s far to tiny for my old eye’s to see. Please thank you xx
Hi Karen!
You can select the text on this page and then copy it into a program like Word.
From there you can make the size bigger and adjust the layout so it’s easy to follow!
Hi, Nikki. For babies, how many chains should I make to start with using DK yarn, please?
Barbara,
That’s so tricky…there are a lot of variable there…so I’m nervous to give you an exact number.
Just remember it will stretch some, but little ones can’t really tell you when it’s too tight!
hi nikki, wheres the second head warmer pattern? 🙂
Here you go, Jane!

Enjoy!
My flower did not come out like the pic it’s not bunched up.
Melissa, Did you tack the leaves down as the pattern instructs you to do?
Hi, Nikki! I’m making a flower right now. I’m on my third try because I keep misreading the pattern LOL. Could you tell me where it says to tack the leaves down? I can’t find that in the pattern. Thank you!
Hi just wondering how to subscribe to your site pl
THANK YOU Nikki, my daughters birthday is this week, going to make this as a gift for her. SHARON OF CHARLOTTE NC USA
Can’t wait to get started on the head warmer. I’m new to crocheting but have learned a lot so far. Retired in May 2016, and my husband and I are the caregivers for my 94 year old father since that time. In my spare time or down time, I crochet. I do projects for various charities and feel that is my calling. Thank you for the free pattern for the head warmer and the flower.
I just tried this. Easy instructions that result in such a nice flower. This was exactly what I was looking for, to add some oomph to a head-warmer I had previously made. Thank you!
Hi Nikki
First thank you for your video. This was the third flower I made for a headband for my sister and I love it.. It came out beautiful.. Thanks again and keep making videos.
Oh, Yay!! Vivian, thank you so much! Your comment made my day!
This is the PERFECT flower! Thank you for posting the instructions. It’s exactly what I was looking for. So full and ruffle-ie 🙂
Yay!! I’m so happy you like it!!!
