How To Make A Phone Charger From An Old {Fake} Book

Nikki · August 1, 2012 · 5 Comments

Call me crazy, but the closest I can come to damaging a book is using the yellow pages for scrap paper.

I love the phone chargers you see on Pinterest and Etsy that are made of old books, but I just can’t bring myself to forever destroy a perfectly good book that someone, somewhere, might enjoy reading. (Don’t roll your eyes at me. If the book is ripped apart and unreadable, have at it. But my love for reading pre-dates my love for crafting, and I just can’t justify destroying someone else’s work of art to create my own.)

So when I saw a stash of fake books (you know…hollow inside, magnetic closure….could be used to hold small items like keys, but usually very expensive) marked down 70% I couldn’t wait to make my guilt-free paperless version!

Enjoy the photo tutorial below,

What drill bit did you use? I made an Iphone dock out of an Atari game and used a regular round drill bit and found it was a bit hard to cut the hole. I had to cut many different holes and then open them up with the edge of the drill bit or a butterknife. Did you use a flat drill bit?

I must admit…making that whole is NOT easy!
I think I did the same thing.
I drilled maybe three or four holes next to each other, then used a craft knife cut out the cover of the book left between. The hole was pretty rough around the edges at first, but I used the craft knife to clean it up!

    A whole hole! Clever!!

However, until I learn how to crochet a hat with a flower I’m not going to start another craft – don’t care what you say!

On My Work Table Today

I’ve completely lost myself in my current design. I don’t mean like lost my sense of style, or lost my motivation, or even lost track of what direction I wanted to take this piece. I mean like I literally lost myself. I’ve been in my studio for hours on end, draping, drafting, and editing on repeat. I am a complete mess, in every sense of the word. My studio is covered in discarded … [Read More...] about Lost In Design…And Loving It
