Nikki, In Stitches is Martha Stewart’s Doer of the Week!

Nikki · August 17, 2011 · 19 Comments

Today is one of the most exciting days of my life…

But I guess I should tell you how I got here first.

Almost one year ago to this day, I was on vacation with my family in Cape Cod, when I got an email from The Crafts Department at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, asking if I’d like to come to New York City for a Blogger’s Night Out.  Within 36 hours, I had a hotel booked, was on my way up to Boston, to take a train down to NYC, and had what I thought was the most amazing experience of this little blogger’s life.  But I spoke too soon…

In January of this year, I once again found myself in New York, this time spending two full days with Martha and her staff, at their Dreamers Into Doers Event.  I walked away so full of ideas, creativity charging through me, ready for Nikki, In Stitches to grow bigger and better than I ever could have dreamed to be! But I spoke too soon…

I have come full circle.

I’m typing this post, while I sit four houses from the beach, once again, on a family vacation.

If I listen carefully I can hear the waves crashing, and if I stand on my tiptoes, I can just get a glimpse of people making their daily trek through the sand, to lay on the beach and enjoy their days in the sun.

And today is one of the most exciting days of my life…

This morning I was selected as Martha Stewart’s Doer of the Week.  Out of all of the thousands of businesses (both craft related and not) that are part of the Dreamers Into Doers program, I was selected as one that stands out.

I’d say that’s pretty darn exciting, no?

You can read my full interview here.  If you’re new to Nikki, In Stitches, you might be interested in the back story of how this little craft blog turned into a successful business, and if you’ve been here from the start, it might be nice for you to take a stroll down memory lane.  I have to say, answering the questions really helped me remember why I started on this journey in the first place, and it was good for me to get back to the roots of Nikki, In Stitches.

So, while I sneak in a few quiet minutes away from the sand and sun, (my little one is napping, exhausted from a morning of digging, filling buckets, and building sandcastles, and my little man is somehow still jumping waves…how does he have so much energy?) I just want to say a few quick thank you’s.  Thank you to all of you, for being so supportive and encouraging.  Many of you are regular commenters and emailers, and I look forward to hearing everything you say.  Thank you to my friends and family, especially my husband, who have been beside me every step of the way.  I would never have taken that first step if it weren’t for all of you.  And thank you to Martha Stewart and her staff.  This is such a huge honor.  And it has been my pleasure to spend my last two summer vacations with you!

Congrats, Nikki! I’m a ‘dreamer’ too, although not as active as I’d like to be. I’m so excited to read about you and your business. You’ve inspired me at a time when I was ready to ‘cash it all in’. I’ve been offering painting tutorials (free) for a while. It seems like people don’t get it. They still think they have to be an artist and they’re totally geared for novice-I-can’t-draw-a-stick-figure types. It’s my passion though and you’ve inspired me to stick with it. Congrats again!

Oh, Colleen! I’m so happy I have helped you get back on track! Keep pushing your rock! That’s the best advice I’ve gotten…there will absolutely be days when you want to “cash it all in” but hang in there! You never know what’s around the corner! And when you need a little motivation or encouragement, just let me know! I’m here!!

On My Work Table Today

I’ve completely lost myself in my current design. I don’t mean like lost my sense of style, or lost my motivation, or even lost track of what direction I wanted to take this piece. I mean like I literally lost myself. I’ve been in my studio for hours on end, draping, drafting, and editing on repeat. I am a complete mess, in every sense of the word. My studio is covered in discarded … [Read More...] about Lost In Design…And Loving It
