How To Make A Button Necklace

Nikki · August 25, 2010 · 13 Comments

How To Make a Button Necklace Video Tutorial from Nikki McGonigal on Vimeo.

I love, love, love button necklaces.

I’ve been wanting to play around with making one myself, but was waiting to find the right buttons.  As I was strolling through the aisles of my local craft store recently, I hit the jackpot!

I’m a teacher at heart, and that’s my favorite part of blogging…showing my readers that really anyone can make these projects.  And, as someone who creates things by hand, I appreciate the time and skill that goes into hand-crafted, one of a kind items.

I promise, with the video provided above and all of the materials by your side, you can not only make this necklace, but you will love it even more, knowing that your own hands put the whole thing together.

Enjoy!

Nikki, In Stitches

It’s a beautiful necklace and I love that you wish to teach and share it with others who love to work with their hands.

      Hi Doreen!
I’m so happy you love the necklace!
I have to be honest and say I really just use whatever size crimp bead I have the works. You are putting A LOT of threads through there so it can’t be too tiny!!

Since I can’t find any kits to purchase as it says in video. (For button necklace) I am assuming they are no longer available

      Hi Norajean!
Unfortunately, yes. My button necklace kits are no longer available. However, I have seen the exact same buttons available at my local craft store, so you could absolutely still make one!!

    Hi Nikki,
Is there a way to purchase the kit for the button necklace? I would love to practice with a kit before attempting the necklace with my own button collection. My only sister passed away suddenly about 5 years ago and I saved all her clothing mostly because I could not part with it. Last year I decided it was time to move on but I decided to keep all her buttons from the clothing. I want to make a necklace for myself using her buttons.
Thanks much, hope to hear from you ……. Marie

Maria, the kits are no longer available, but considering you have the buttons, you have almost everything you need! Some thread and a closure is all that’s left!

On My Work Table Today

I’ve completely lost myself in my current design. I don’t mean like lost my sense of style, or lost my motivation, or even lost track of what direction I wanted to take this piece. I mean like I literally lost myself. I’ve been in my studio for hours on end, draping, drafting, and editing on repeat. I am a complete mess, in every sense of the word. My studio is covered in discarded … [Read More...] about Lost In Design…And Loving It
