Block Five: A Dove in the Window

Nikki · April 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

dove-in-the-window-block-5This is a traditional Dove in the Window block, with a little tweaking of fabric placement.  When starting this sampler quilt, I purchased a Sultry Layer Cake and a coordinating Sultry Charm Pack of Moda fabrics.  I believe in the Sultry line, a Layer Cake contains 42 pieces of precut fabric measuring 10″ square, and Charm Packs measure 5″ square.  Often times for this project, I have barely had enough fabric to complete my blocks, and I have had to do some creative, behind the scenes cutting, or adjusted the placement of my fabrics.  However, buying the precut fabric has allowed me to get the most variety in my blocks…almost too much.  I started to get worried that my quilt may end up too busy.  You’ll notice in most of the remaining blocks, a green tonal pops up multiple times.  I’m hoping this provides some continuity in my quilt.  I found this fabric in my stash (I’m so proud that I actually used my stash and resisted the urge to just run to my quilt shop!), and have used it in many quilts in the past.  It’s one of my favorites.  It has a little bit of shimmer to it, just enough to make it more than just a boring, but very useful, tonal fabric.

Enjoy,

Nikki, In Stitches

Green Tonal:

  • Cut 2 medium squares 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″
  • Cut 4 squares 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″. Cut squares once diagonally to make 8 small triangles.
  • Cut 8 rectangles 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″

Brown Paisley:

  • Cut 1 large square 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″
  • Cut 2 medium squares 2 7/8″ x 2 7/8″

Brown / Pink Print:

  • Cut 8 small squares 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • Cut 2 squares 4 7/8″ x 4 7/8″. Cut squares once diagonally to make 4 large triangles.

dove-in-the-window-step-11. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each Green Tonal 2 7/8″ square from corner to corner. With right sides together, place 1 Green Tonal square on top of 1 Brown Paisley 2 7/8″ square. Stitch 1/4″ on each side of the drawn line. Cut the square into two triangles by cutting on the diagonally drawn line. Press to the Brown Paisley fabric to complete a Triangle Unit. Make 4 Triangle Units.

dove-in-the-window-step-22. Sew a Green Tonal triangle to one side of a Triangle Unit. Press to the Green Tonal triangle.

dove-in-the-window-step-33. Sew another Green Tonal triangle to the adjacent side of the same Triangle Unit. Again, press to the Green Tonal triangle to complete Unit A. Make 4 Unit A’s.

dove-in-the-window-step-44. Sew a Unit A and a large Brown / Pink Print triangle together to make Unit B. Press to the Brown / Pink Print. Make 4 Unit B’s.

dove-in-the-window-step-55. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each Brown / Pink Print 2 1/2″ square from corner to corner. With right sides together, align 1 Brown / Pink Print square with the left side of 1 Green Tonal rectangle. Stitch on the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric by cutting 1/4″ out from the stitching line. Press to the Brown / Pink Print fabric.

dove-in-the-window-step-66. With right sides together, align another Brown / Pink Print square with the right side of the same Green Tonal rectangle. Stitch on the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric by cutting 1/4″ out from the stitching line. Press to the Brown / Pink Print fabric, to complete a Flying Geese Unit. Make 4 Flying Geese Units.

dove-in-the-window-step-77. Sew 1 Flying Geese Unit and 1 Green Tonal rectangle together. Press to the Green Tonal rectangle to complete Unit C. Make 4 Unit C’s.

dove-in-the-window-step-88. Sew a Unit B to each side of Unit C. Press to the Unit B’s. Repeat this with the other two remaining Unit B’s.

dove-in-the-window-step-99. Sew the remaining two Unit C’s to each side of the large Brown Paisley square. Press to Brown Paisley.

dove-in-the-window-step-1010. Sew Rows 1 and 2 together, pressing towards Row 2. Sew Row 3 on to the bottom, pressing towards Row 2 again.

On My Work Table Today

I’ve completely lost myself in my current design. I don’t mean like lost my sense of style, or lost my motivation, or even lost track of what direction I wanted to take this piece. I mean like I literally lost myself. I’ve been in my studio for hours on end, draping, drafting, and editing on repeat. I am a complete mess, in every sense of the word. My studio is covered in discarded … [Read More...] about Lost In Design…And Loving It
