Cold weather is here. There is no more denying it. And, given the economic year our country has had, many, many people are illprepared for what the winter will bring. I consider myself very lucky. I have a home, with heat, and a fireplace that warms my heart, but, for some, their hands will not feel the warmth of a flame in a hearth and their hearts will be touched by frost for the next six months. As I’ve said before, I’m determined to do whatever I can to help, and if I can use the creative skills I was blessed with, even better.
If you’ve been a long time reader of Nikki, In Stitches, you’ll know that I am hosting a sweater drive, however, my new readers may not be familiar with my goal.
Earlier this year, I came across a project from Martha, where she suggested making mittens from old sweaters. I made a pair for myself, and was inspired to make more…many more…as many as I could, to then donate to homeless shelters and charities that could get these mittens on the hands of all the people who will need them this winter.
I have already received bags and bags of sweaters. Once again, I feel blessed to have such generous friends. My goal is to deliver my mittens on Thanksgiving. That gives everyone three more weeks to do a final cleanout of their closets, and get me their sweaters. This is the time of year when many of you will head out and purchase a few new sweaters to sport during the upcoming holidays, and it’s also a perfect time to purge a few that don’t get very much wear. Any sweater will do, in any size, in any condition. Of course, any sweaters I receive after Thanksgiving will still be turned into mittens, but I’d like to get as many pairs out there as I can before the bitter cold of a northeastern winter hits.
Please feel free to pass my project along to everyone you know. My thanks to all of you that already have. Talk of my little mitten drive has made its way from coast to coast, and been highlighted on blogs across the internet. Most recently, I was highlighted on Stylestance, a blog that strives to combine style and substance. The response I have received has been tremendous, but we still have time to do more.
Please contact me at NikkiInStitches@gmail.com if you are interested in donating sweaters, and please pass this along to everyone you can. Together we can warm the hands of those in need.
Thank you again to everyone that has already contributed,
Nikki, In Stitches
